Systems Flight Test and OT&E Training

The core Ibis course is the 4-week Systems Flight Test and Operational Test & Evaluation Course. This course is aimed at pilots and flight test engineers involved in the flight testing and evaluation of avionic systems in aircraft. Our students are typically from manufacturer’s flight test centres, air force flight test centres, and OT&E centres. It is based around fast jet and rotary wing military aircraft, but the final week of the course can be modified to accommodate the needs of personnel from multi-engine aircraft flight test centres.

Ibis identified at an early stage that many pilots and engineers engaged in testing and evaluating avionic systems in flight test centres have received little or no training in how to carry out this crucial task. Although there are often fully qualified test pilots at these flight test centres, much of the avionic systems testing, evaluation and development is carried out by experienced pilots with no specialised training in this field.

Flight test and evaluation of avionic systems requires a detailed understanding of how those systems operate, what their shortcomings are, and what flight test techniques should be used. Careful and structured planning is essential, as is experience of observing and recording performance. Skill in reporting the findings is also necessary if the results are to be fully understood by others.

This Ibis course provides the knowledge and skills necessary to enable pilots and engineers to fit into a flight test & evaluation team effectively, efficiently, and safely.

Classroom instruction is coupled with practical airborne experience and the use of modern aircraft simulators. Ibis tutors on this course are qualified test pilots, experienced OT&E pilots, aerosystems qualified observers, or experienced design engineers; all have great experience in their fields of responsibility.

For full course details and the dates of our next course please contact us.

The course provides the attendees with both a good technical understanding of military radar systems and a thorough understanding of relevant flight test and evaluation techniques. This is reinforced with practical experience of running radar performance tests and MMI assessments in the Typhoon simulator at BAE Systems, Warton (run in unclassified mode). It is our aim to provide cost-effective training which will enable the attendees to return to their employer as useful team players equipped to participate in major radar flight test programs.

The course is of four days duration including approximately 10 hrs of classroom instruction covering the theory of modern military radars and their testing. As noted above, practical experience is provided in the Typhoon simulator.

The course is run by members of Ibis staff; an experienced ex-RAF Aerosystems qualified Tornado F3 navigator with several years radar flight test experience at BAE Systems Warton; and an ex-RAF qualified test pilot with several years experience flight testing Typhoon and other aircraft at BAE Systems, Warton.

Radar Flight Test Course

The Radar Flight Test Course is designed to introduce selected personnel to the theory of modern military radar systems and their flight testing. Attendees will typically be pilots and flight test engineers from military flight test centres and Operational Test & Evaluation (OT&E) units who have not had the opportunity of formalised training in radar testing and assessment.

Civil Avionics Flight Test Course

Practical evaluation experience is gained by the inclusion of flight test exercises on flight simulators of the latest airliner types.  The exercises are designed to maximise the involvement of the delegates in all phases of the planning, execution and reporting of the evaluation.  Each delegate can expect to fly full motion flight simulators of the B787 (HUD-equipped) and the A380.   A course visit is made to a systems manufacturer’s site.

“Our pilots and engineers returned from the course with a much better understanding of how to run safe, efficient flight test and evaluation programmes here.”

“A great course, with many highly specialised

instructors – thank you!”

The avionic systems fitted to the airliners and commuter aircraft of today draw upon a vast array of technologies, and they have brought about their own revolution in the way in which aircraft are operated. The complexity and high level of integration of these systems make it increasingly necessary for personnel working in systems flight testing to be familiar with the sub-systems incorporated in their aircraft and with their particular methods of assessment. IBIS has solid experience of teaching the theory, operational use, and assessment of avionic systems to both engineers and pilots, and has designed this course of training to meet this very real need.

The course duration is 15 working days. Classroom instruction provides delegates with a full understanding of the operation of the core avionic systems and of their strengths and weaknesses as systems. Delegates are then introduced to the test and evaluation methods appropriate to each system type. An overview of flight test organisation, documentation and report writing is also provided. Delegates will produce test plans, test cards and both post-flight reports and full reports during the course, with assistance being provided by Ibis staff where required. Total lecture time is approximately 70 hours.

This course is aimed at pilots and flight test engineers from civil flight test centres who have not had the opportunity of formalised training in systems testing and assessment. Some of our past delegates have also been qualified flight test personnel seeking an update on the latest avionic systems and their testing.
